By taking a few simple precautions, you can dramatically reduce the risk:
- Always lock all doors and windows when you’re away from home (In 2 out of 10 burglaries they don’t even have to use force – they get in through an open window ).
- Use automatic lights on timers when you are away from home.
- Consider installing a security alarm (you could save an extra 10%on your insurance premium), remember to test it regularly to ensure it is working.
- Keep doorways and ground floor windows clear of shrubbery.
- Consider buying motion-sensitive lights.
- Be a good neighbour – if you spot anything suspicious in your neighbourhood – call the police.
- Never leave a spare key in a convenient hiding place – thieves know all the usual hiding places.
- When you move house – change all of the locks immediately.
The following actions could help you get your property back in the event of a burglary:
- Make a list of all your belongings (this is also important in the event of a house fire).
- Photographing or videotaping your possessions is quick and convenient – this will help police identify them if they are stolen.
- Be sure you have the right insurance coverage to protect special items like jewellery.
- Mark all belongings with your postcode. Items should be visibly marked with your postcode and number of your house. This may put burglars off and can help police prosecute criminals.
- If permanently marking your belongings will damage them, then you should use an ultra violet marker pen.
